What should I expect from my first appointment?
-If the counseling is for a child (under age 18), the first session is for both the parent and the child to attend together. This will allow the parent to provide the therapist with background information about the child and reasons for the child needing counseling. The parent can also choose to attend this session alone or split the time with the child. Following this appointment, the child will begin his/her counseling. The child will always have the choice of whether he/she wants to attend the session alone with the therapist or if he/she would like his/her parents to attend the session too.
-If there is any custody paperwork for the child who is attending counseling, this must be presented to the therapist prior to or during at the initial session. The child cannot be seen by the therapist if applicable custody paperwork is not provided. If paperwork is not provided at the child’s first appointment, the appointment will be cancelled, and a cancellation fee will be charged.
-For adults, your first session consists of an intake assessment in which you will help the therapist understand your background and the reasons for attending counseling.
